The Oued Kelaa gorge cuts through the Rif Mountains in an almost impossibly dramatic fashion — vertical limestone walls, clear green water far below, and a hiking trail that winds along the cliff edge before descending to the riverbed and a series of natural pools and cascades. At the end of the lower trail sits the first waterfall; further up, for those with older children and more energy, the God's Bridge and the grand upper waterfall reward the extra effort extravagantly.

This is mountain Morocco at its most beautiful — and the walk is genuinely accessible for families with children from around age five upward.

Getting to Akchour

Akchour village lies approximately 25km north of Chefchaouen along the P4604 road. The drive takes around 40–50 minutes, winding through cedar and oak forest with views across the Rif Mountains. A private transfer (as arranged by RenaissanceTravels) is the most comfortable option for families. Grand taxis from Chefchaouen to Akchour are also available; agree a price before departing.

There is a small parking area in Akchour village where the trail begins. The village itself has simple cafes and a few stalls selling water and snacks — a good place to top up supplies before setting off.

The Two Routes: Which Suits Your Family?

Route A — Lower Waterfalls

Distance6km round trip
Duration2–3 hours
DifficultyEasy–Moderate
Suitable forChildren 4+

The trail follows the gorge path along the river to the first waterfall and its natural plunge pool. The path is well-marked, mostly flat with some rocky sections, and the river is crossed several times on stepping stones. The waterfall itself — about 20 metres high, cascading into a clear turquoise pool — is one of Morocco's most beautiful natural sights. This route is the right choice for families with young children or anyone not accustomed to mountain terrain.

Route B — God's Bridge & Upper Waterfalls

Distance14km round trip
Duration5–7 hours
DifficultyModerate–Challenging
Suitable forChildren 8+

The extended route continues past the lower waterfall, climbing through the gorge to the natural rock arch known as God's Bridge — a remarkable geological formation spanning the river 50 metres above the water. The upper waterfall, reached after a further climb, is even more dramatic than the lower: a 100-metre plunge of white water into a vast emerald pool. This route requires good footwear, a full day, and enough water for the return journey. It is one of the finest hiking experiences in northern Morocco.

Trail conditions

In June, the trails are in good condition and the river level is manageable for crossing. Earlier in spring (March–April), snowmelt can make the river crossings significantly more challenging. In July and August, the paths can be crowded and the sun is intense at lower elevation. June is the optimal month for this hike.

What to Pack for the Akchour Hike with Children

Swimming at the Waterfall

The plunge pool at the base of the lower waterfall is one of the most beautiful natural swimming spots in Morocco. The water is clear and cool, fed directly from mountain springs. In June it is cold but invigorating — most children (and many adults) are in the water within minutes of arriving.

Modest swimwear is perfectly comfortable at Akchour. The majority of visitors are Moroccan families, and the environment is relaxed and family-oriented. There is no beach-resort feeling — just a mountain gorge and natural water.

Refreshments and Return

Several simple cafe-restaurants operate in Akchour village and at the trailhead, serving tea, tajine, and basic snacks. Arriving back after the lower waterfall route (midday to early afternoon) gives families time for a relaxed lunch in the village before the drive back to Chefchaouen. The evening return journey — with the Rif Mountains glowing in the late afternoon light — is beautiful.

Akchour is included in our Northern Tranquility Escape.

Our most popular itinerary includes a guided family hike to Akchour's lower waterfalls — with private transfer, a packed lunch from a local halal kitchen, and all logistics handled. You bring the children; we handle everything else.
